“Marshall”

A wound behind his head
Where he was unable to lick clean
And in that neglectful period
It began to look obscene
As the blow fly maggots
Gobbled up the festering flesh
And blood
In a couple days it’s was awful
It was a gaping flood

The pain of deterioration
Spoiling and misuse
The poor soul lying in the dirt and dust
So much abuse
Called we took one look at him
Eyes closed waiting for
The servant with his sickle
To end his life for sure

Wrapping him in our blanket
We carried him away
Put him in our surgery
And powdered him
A day kills the maggots
And removing them
And the dead skin
All the nectrotic tissue
That we could find within

The wound was wast and bloody
Washed and cleaned
And we dressed it every single day
For a week and we could see
That with our care and attention
And the fresh dressing each day
The wound was getting smaller
And healing in every way

“Marshall” was brave boy
The perfect patient he
Clearly knew we were helping him
Not a yelp at all he be
Given to the need to heal
And that is what we saw
Each time we changed his dressings
The wound was much less raw

His powers of healing clearly
His positivity
His courage and commitment
All of us could see
He ate well
And before too long
Was walking on the rein
And before too long was running
His tail wagging hard again
