Just one poor soul’s passing

Some where in Kentucky at a Stockyards
a pleasant September, if I recall
a downer that’s a full grown cow
who couldn’t move at all
lame from all the milking
her life had been a strain
in less than half of her allotted
time on earth
it was very plain
all she could do was lie there
in the filthy sun baked truck
realising in her heart
that she’d used up all her luck

she was suffering like crazy
her joints were stiff with pain
why had she come into this world
to hear this sad refrain
to see how humans felt about her
how they didn’t care
how they left her feeling
in the pit of dark despair
they came and started prodding her
and kicking her, for she
was taking up space in a truck
where she just shouldn’t be

those electric prods were burning her
but she just felt nonchalantly
that whatever they were doing
well, it had to be
she lay there looking into space
hopeful somehow, she
could leave this awful world behind
where nobody was free

they tied a rope around her neck
and one around a pole
and reversed the truck and
she slid out this very heavy soul
down she fell onto the ground
both hind legs she snapped
it also crushed her pelvis
in more pain she was wrapped

egregious torture
and laughter from the men
nobody gave thought to care
the cow was wondering when
the mortal plain would disappear
and she could leave and go
somewhere where the pain was less
she wanted this you know

the sun was burning down on her
she felt relieved to pass
to urinate and defecate
and they as bold as brass
wouldn’t give her water
and certainly no care
they left her laying in her mess
completely unaware

she felt so uncomfortable
smelling all that muck
and somehow pulled herself away
a few yards
that did suck!
to see her strain and struggle
just to get out of the mess
to try and find some clean ground
no one could want for less

and using whatever energy she had left
she managed to
drag her painful body
on whatever was left she drew
she lay there till the evening
she must have felt so sad
the humans were not sentient
she never thought she had

realised exactly the extent
of where they were
but thinking back on it
she was able to concur
they were spiritless and lacked
any emotion she for saw
an end for them in some dark place
where they dare not ask for more

she lay there kind of thinking
back on the life she’d had
raped and beaten many times
and feeling just so sad
how they had taken her calves away
and killed them on the spot
and how she had died inside herself
and that all this pain had not

prevented her from remembering
how she was milked to death
to feed the massive human tribe
with her babies denied breath
remembering how they gasped in pain
as each one’s eyes closed tight
a life snuffed out without a doubt
all stolen from the light

creation had attempted to
provide her offspring every time
both were good and both were true
but both not worth a dime
both were male
and useless all they would do
was eat
no money could be made from them
they were just dead meat

and so the rusty sickle
the murderers stock in trade
was brought into our being
and their bodies quickly laid
before me
I could see them
babies after all
who were life
and it was taken
by some ugly troll like fool

the shock was always weakening
internal bleeding was
dragging her away from life
really now because
the really total heartlessness
from the stock men around a bout
she never heard a kind word spoken
and had no call to doubt

the monstrousness and evil
that she was facing there
until a animal rights soul came
yes one of the rare
souls that help the animals
she gave her water, and
it must have been a godsend
to feel a human hand

laid on her in kindness
rather than in wrath
a little bit of tenderness
on this brutal path
Jessie left at 3 o’clock
and came back in less than 2
the cow was being attacked by dogs
who seemingly did chew

into her sick body
by now her eyes a glaze
how she managed to stay alive
and see through her blood haze
really I cant imagine
and really no one knows
the police came
but they went away
and she was much the same

and finally we saw
the butcher and he shot her through
exposing yet more blood and gore
that’s what butchers do
300 dollars or so she cost
and she was dragged away
a downer who had finally left this planet
so to say

her life had been so dismal
so unfortunate and we
had let this evil happen
we preferred not to see
oh yes we may have drunk her stolen milk
and ate the cheese
forgetting each time she had given birth
how they did seize

them
and just do away with them
so humans could partake
all the milk belonged to them
nothing for her poor rake
she watched it gasping at her feet
instinctively it knew
her milk was close by
but of course it all was mean’t for you

and you and you and you and you
for cream
for cheese for you
all her babies lost out
for that is what they do
every baby dies a death
as soon as it is born
and every mother cries aloud
as her babies torn

just one poor soul’s passing
you have witnessed in this rhyme
but really this has been happening
since the birth of time
billions of little babies
the holocaust is there’s
the animals have given up
ever saying prayers

for nobody was listening
nobody did care
nobody came to their aid
no one was aware
the downers and there are many
and many more each day
as the human tribe get more obese
and many pass a way

loaded with bovine growth hormone
their bodies are so racked and torn
and nobody outside the dairy
apparently is there to warn
not to sup milk from our udders
its only babies now who
can take this rich creamy milk which is ours
include the chemical stew

karma is growing as sick cows are lowing
you have read this and now know its true
so many calves have been broken and put down
and really its all down to you
your ignorance and all that arrogant stuff
with the dairies as rich as can be
but far far away in the summer land fields
perhaps you will bump into me
