the fate of old pets

We tell ourselves
they cannot speak
but mutes of course
they are not
they just speak a different
language
but they understand a lot
as we do we can’t choose to not
accept them for of course we know
what they think
and how they think
and what will be a blow
to them
yea old and haggard
with a heart that beats away
and realises they want
a young version so they say
I am on the scrap heap
I limp a bit and I
need to be got rid of
that’s the reason why

a newer prettier model
one that turns the heads
I turn the heads for different reasons
and I’m costing them in Meds
so its clear the pound is looming
my collar and my coat
are coming with me to the place
for on me now they don’t dote

in fact they do not care at all
its a younger dog they need
so I am being pensioned off
with my collar and my lead
a last look at the old house
and my basket by the hearth
I’m getting the injection
and taking the rainbow path
