Nuptial flights

Today is one of those balmy days

when the black ants do their thing

appear from various crevices

possibly to bring

Us all a taste of  ant flights

winged they peel away

As a child I always remember

it happened  on a summers day

but I understand there is no set day

it has to be hot though when

Lots crawl from the cracks and crevices

a time as I pen

their initial movements

flying to the sky

to be eaten by the waiting birds

who probably rely

on this formic acid  bounty

this lemony  embrace

the workers are still scurrying around

at quite a pace.
