The magic of Namaqualand

The great Mothers Magic
Is boundless
From the huge barren plains
All we see
Is a scuttle of insects
Over the dust
Inhospitable obstinacy

Spring though is around the corner
If it rains what you will see
Is the great wand spread over
The desert and rain drops that just
Seem to be

The bringers of dreams and real magic
As out of the arid parched soil
Flowers start to burst through and stand in the sun
This is the start of their toil

Upwards and outwards each beautiful petal
Forms and joins up with each bloom
All sorts of colours a rainbow of gifts
Edge up together for room

This whole arid plain is becoming
A great secret blanket of flowers
This has to be a true miracle here
It covers the ground in just hours

From the Atlantic Ocean west through the dunes
And inland for about 80 miles
This amazing carpet of perfume and colour
Really it ticks all the dials

An extravaganza of blossom of nectar
Of pollen galore
All sorts of insects come hither to taste
Nothing on earth could ignore

This is a one off of nature
Its magic too much for ones eyes
A carpet of scent thats some how been lent
And really the magic defies

Ostrich chicks enter the arena
And nibble the blossoms they find
All sorts of flowers with all sorts of powers
And all of them seemed to unwind

Out of the sky just came water
The rain brought them upwards and we
Witnessed the absolute wonder
That everyone there could now see

Spring didn’t last not a long time
And all of these flowers were soon gone
Just masses of seeds evidence of deeds
Lying and drying upon

The desert again it was arid
Summer was well on the way
40 degrees now and rising
The sun really high now would pay

The Meer cats are down in the shadows
A lizard or two ball like there
The flowers were just all now a memory
Stress had returned and despair
