Hillary’s Boat Harbour north of Perth in WA

Bertram John Hillary
one of the, first settlers
with his brother Harry
built a boat shed
on the beach, right here

fished and plied their
wares they did
really in a desperate bid
to beat the great depression
and the fear

the blueness of that ocean
the blueness of that sky
the sheltered nature of the harbour
where the boats could lie

the vastness of the ocean
a store house he could see
the great abundance out there
it was the place to be

later when the army
during manoeuvres it was claimed
they called the beach
“Hillary’s” and that’s why
it was named

In 1988
the state decided to inject
some money in developing the site
not circumspect

at all they seemed to realise
that this was a perfect site
and so the new boat harbour
was born
and they’ve been proved right

It is everything to everyone
For a lovely family day
Just North of Perth
some 20 minute drive
and your on your way

The Indian Ocean beckons
where yachts and boats do ply
where everyone is welcome
underneath the sky

Parking, all the parking
on site completely free
a pretty little still water beach
for the whole family

places to discover
amenities to share
unusual shops and restaurants
Yes, everything is there

everything is thought about
playgrounds amusements for
the children
its got everything
you couldn’t ask for more

I just loved sitting
on the wall
just above the beach
watching Michael playing
never out of reach

ice creams, lollies cold drinks
you can sit and watch the sea
sunbathe,wander here and there
jog, and well just be

relaxed, about the day you spend
at Hillary’s and know
Its history is no mystery
as my poem here does show

And I am sure that Bertram
feels the happiness now there
the laughter of the children
and the sweetness of the air

The ocean ever plentiful
a splendid paradise
which is still being improved each year
which will only, entice

People from all around the place
to go and weekend there
with apartments to be rented
its the answer to a prayer

for older folks, and families
for its so welcoming, and
its clean, well run and
with lots of sun
For me I found it grand
