Shiloh Pepin the little mermaid girl of Maine

I met a young lady
last evening
On a youtube video
I watched it
in its entirety
And she moved me
Just with her glow
Shiloh Pepin
born with Sirenomelia
Where she
Came to be known
as the mermaid child
And in ten years easily

Reached the hearts of many
Certainly mine last night
For she had a realisation
And epitomised
The truest light
Apparently indestructible
Enduring and alive
Her legs were fused together
Thought impossible to survive
Only one partial kidney
No colon none at all
No genital organs whatsoever
Her parents though had got the call

She could’t and she wouldn’t
Survive for this ordeal
Was impossible to contemplate
Sadly that was real
But Shiloh was a fighter
In herself a visionary
She possessed
a marvellous little brain
And a lot of clarity

Physically she had problems
Phenomenal it’s true
But she felt her incarnation
To want to see it through
Parents there who loved her
Who wanted her to be
The child they had always wanted
Their child that they could see
An embodiment of reality
Inseparable was she
Somewhat of an extrovert
Bound up in constancy
A joyful disposition
And logical
Shiloh was their daughter
The greatest gift was she

She had her own identity
An authenticity
Living in Kennbunkport
In Maine
Somewhere really
nice to be
At variance yes possibly
And unpredictability
Both parents loved her equally
And she responded faithfully
With equivalence and parity
A parable that seems to me
To compliment and wholly be
A child whose growth was wonderfully

Watched and loved with so much care
Elmer her father and Leslie did share
All of the chores
Love conquered all
Creative production
And so much did fall
On the two of them able
And wanting to give
All their support
So their daughter would live
Sirenomelia is very rare
No frame of reference
Actually there

Conflict of opinions
Dissent and stress
Was bound to arise
This challenge no less
But Shiloh was loving
A warrior too
With a sense of accord
And a congruent view
She was able to speak well
She had a rapport
And her mind well adjusted
Attuned and sure
An amazing character
In a young soul
Organically tested
But had some control

An outstanding mind
She spoke very well
She was extraordinary
And she could sell
Herself and essentially
Transcend and be
Able to confound
And did notably
As a family
Their dietary habits
One saw
Were more on the processed foods
They did ignore
Nutrition to some extent
And Shiloh grew
And became less than able
To exercise through

So was put on a diet
A better regime
To assist her young body
And try to redeem
And help her to manage
To move and to climb
Which helped her
It did in the passing of time
A considerable handicap
That goes without saying
But her mind surpassed that
Held her own and was playing
A role in the family
In so many ways
Her matchless performance
It did seem to raise

Her up in the stakes
She was competent she
Knew what she wanted
And where she might be
All the while the doctors
And medical side
Were treating her
weighing her
Watching her ride
Over the bumps of her young life
To date
And were wholly objective
In what was her fate

At School she was learning
Discerning and knowing
Spoke very well
Clearly was showing
An interest in life
In her life and abroad
Harmonised well
And received the accord
But her parents were
Arguing sadly the stress
It was always difficult
And to confess
A breakdown occasioned
Her father to leave
and some stress to evolve
Where she must achieve

More she must go downstairs
On her own
Her father had carried her down
She had known
But gradually practised
And found a way to try
And get down by herself
And did by and by
She had that connectedness
A united front
Though It was difficult
Still worth a punt
And so she just did it
Helped by her mother
And was so philosophic
There was never another

Child in my lifetime
Who I have seen
Who was able to counter
With a made up routine
Which just goes to show
If we want to we can
Watching her struggle
Oh I am a fan !
The medics had wanted
To separate
Her legs but she thought NO
Had she Forseen her fate
Who knows she was able
She managed and she
Was going to stay
As she was, she felt free

She learned to swim
With a coach who was true
Gentle and kind
And taught her to do
A whole length of the swimming baths
She Did it she
A wonderful being
and just so lively
She went off to camp
On her own just with friends
Her father took her
For her to tHe ends of the earth
For his daughter
He surely woukd go
That was the love
That did so freely flow

She was the first mermaid Child
Ever to
Live after birth
Nearly 10
And was true to herself
And was given to be
What she really wanted
And that was key
Watching it last night
A child YES she was
But her manner and calmness
It was because
She knew she was special
She acted that way
She possessed confidence
And was a ray
Of light for all comers
She summed up things well
She believed in herself
Under her own spell

At 10 years old she
Died can this be
The little philosopher
Came from the sea
A mermaid perhaps
Whose heart and whose soul
Was a big as the ocean
And lived up to her role

As a teacher of all things
