BIRJU scalded and left to die

They found him by the roadside
Wounded and bleeding he
Just looking at his injuries
I cried how can they be
So very very terrible
Who allowed so much neglect
Scalded him with boiling water
And the street dirt did infect

A huge patch on his scalded skin
Writhing from so many flies
Feasting on his scalded flesh
Scant respect that’s about the size
Of this gross irreverence
This humiliation here
The agony this donkey must be feeling
It’s so clear

A wave of flies a minor fog
The maggots gorging hard
His feet and legs were injured too
It’s difficult for a bard
To watch and write a poem
Of the horror that one sees
Rajasthan the hospital
Where everyone agrees

This sanctuary is special
Animals aid unlimited
Street angels working night and day
Everyone so spirited
To help all of the animals
Suffering so much
Stranded and forsaken
Without even a crutch

Nobody to help him
Poor BIRJU suffered so
Hope was fast stagnating
Everyday a low
And really very difficult to lift
Himself and try
To be steady and use calmness
When he thought he soon would die

By day 30 cleansed and bandaged
Every single day
Antibiotic powder and antiseptic spray
Love and patting cuddling
Talking quietly to
BIRJU talking tenderly
Confidence building true

He still had problems walking
His hind legs wounded bad
His gait was awfully painful
He was extra sad
Watching him progress slowly
Feeling the pain each day
Suffering really suffering
Though he began to bray

Quietly at first but did it
Aroused And feeling good
Day 150 imagine this
Doing what he should
Ebullient and effervescent
Rolling on the floor
Still bleeding from an open wound
But much better than before

Looking at his progress
One can remember he
Broke our hearts when he came in
His martyrdom could be
Worse than any animals perhaps
We had ever seen
And how he managed to stand there
So very painfully lean

Indisposed and aching
Tormented by it all
Every single day new dressings
Trying to overhaul
The infections and the damage
Of all those maggots who
Basically ate so much away
As hungry maggots do

And now he still is wounded
It’s healing by the day
Still he is being bandaged
Up but has begun to play
There are other donkeys a calf
Some sheep all friends
And the love he gets from everyone
Truthfully it sends

The life force around his body
Hope clearly we feel
His spirit warm and happy
He is the proper deal
He adores all the affection
That is given so freely and
Responds with true improvements
To every caring hand

His courage was remarkable
The working animals they
Bear the brunt of anger
Of indiscretion along the way
So vulnerable and wantIng
Of aid over the woe
Still overwhelmingly beautiful
With his new found glow
