April the donkey

There she was the worse for wear
A gaping hole
A soulful stare
A Jennet suffering all could see
And probably feel that agony
She was in a dishevelled state
Abandoned to her probable fate
Death was close
One had to say
When the animal aid
Arrived that day

She was losing ground
And rapidly
Impoverished
She had to be
A casualty in rapid need
The worse for wear
Oh yes indeed

Maggots they were everywhere
The wound was writhing
Such despair
She felt of course she felt alone
And the wound so deep
It exposed the bone

Animal aid unlimited came
Picked her up
Her weakened frame
And took her back to the hospital where
They removed the dirt
And some of the hair
Applied the maggot powder
And she
Was bandaged up
For maybe three
Hours the wound then
Sluiced and clean
Antibiotics
Where there had been
Sepsis and once again
Covered for she
Would have to heal
For her to be

Ten days passed and everyday
The wound was cleaned
And they did spray
Antibiotics
And in ten days
The wound itself
Reached a rapid phase
Of healing
And she clearly was
Stronger really just because
The angels loved her
The angels cared
And that’s the way
Her life was spared

2 months later
She was well
From being close to death
She had this spell
This recovery
This healing state
And she joined a pack
In the hill to wait

And is there still
With new friends she be
Foraging daily
Happily
She isn’t lonely
Not any more
She’s fed and watered
And extra sure
