The Elder and the Birch

The Elder ends its reign
On the twenty second day
Of December
Then on the 24th
The Birch kicks in
Her way
Set for her through
The Wintry months
The dark months
Where her light
Opens up a path for us
Wanderers of the night

Elder a blood builder
Its berries and stems so red
With a motherly spirit
In Ireland long ago it was said
She will protect the children
For in ancient Ireland they
Were treasured and why shouldnt they be
Every single day

The Fae found wealth and favour
Around them and I know
From the branches when they were hollowed
Music it can flow
Ballads of such wonderment
From the pipes of pan
Listening to the faeries
Its how all life began

Onto the Birch the ladies
Of the forest of fine hair
Silvery skin a wayward shower
Honest to goodness
Through each hour
The Goddess tree
Is where we be
They light the path to where
We see the Rowan following on
The Druids tree in prayer
