Ingenuity

Iron and steel and concrete
And ingenuity
All the right proportions
And made so generously
Up against the climate
The weather and the sea
The wind that howls into the bridge
With such velocity

The sky its there and closing in
The sea it wants to be
The bridge that we are driving on
It certainly seems to me
Able to withstand one hopes
This unmitigated mass
Of mist and rain and spray
The bane of those who hit the gas

Driving really hazardously
As huge waves tip and pour
You feel your car blown sideways
No one can ignore
The dangers that are present
This Atlantic open road
With great brine curtains smashing down
So imagine you might implode

Cars are truly flimsy these days
And with the weight one feels
You could be just a dinky car
The pressure just reveals
So much power hitting the bridge
Every single day
Thank goodness for the engineers
Who countered this dismay
