Tungurahua

Tungurahua or throat of fire
Looms over Banos, she
Is a lady warrioress
Smoking passionately
When I was there a shaft of grey
Was always in the sky
The indigenous know of her spirit
And the anger in her eye

Ash falls all about
And In other towns around
We are near the Pastaza River
Where I found it on the ground
Its a town famed for its leather goods
I stayed there for a week
Watching the humming birds
Near my window
Poking their little beak
Into the flowers close to me
Fascinating souls
Tiny and multi coloured
Each taking up their roles
Probably unknowing
Of The mighty mountain there
Dwarfing them completely
And Thrusting ash now everywhere.
Was I ever frightened
I don’t think I was
I was just enjoying life
Really just because

Everyone was, there .
