The last pig. The old ways

I wonder why a farmer ever sends his
Pigs to slaughter
How he sleeps at night knowing
They were trucked there without
Water
Without food, he looked into
Their eyes and what he saw
Was a profound regard for him
That he just could not ignore

They have a wealth of experience
And they show it in their eyes
Clearly they are sentient
And very very wise
A responsiveness and an understanding
Of whats going on
And when they are loaded on the truck
They know that life is gone

This particular farmer
Thinks this way he knows
To have the power to kill a soul
It really does pose
A terrible dilemma
And he has personally
Been haunted by their final cries
And the deaths he didn’t see

He imagines how they might have felt
Their raw feelings he shares
Their uneasiness and discomfort
He truthfully now shares
The last pig is a film about him
One last pig must die
Under his watch under his care
And now he has to try

And get over all these killings
Their faces so forlorn
He has loved them and has raised
Since they all were born
He knows each and every one of them
And all of them they care
They look at him they know the score
And he knows that its not fair

He gives them life a forest
To mingle and to root
He does the very best for them
And of course he does refute
The CAFO claim of need
The concentration camps where he
Knows these bright young charges
Die internally

Their trials and tribulations
Are growing by the day
Being anxious and down trodden
Such emotions they display
He feels deep in his sinew
For them,its in his voice
To carry on he cannot
He has therefore a choice

Distribution as it is
Corporate costing rules
Little farmers caring farmers
They are seen as fools
Its now the great conglomerate
The gestation crates and pain
The ugly face of farming
The stress levels and pain

There is no love of animals
They tragically have become
Commodities to do with
All under the thumb
Of profit and economics
There is no care anymore
Its hell on earth for animals
Which the public do ignore

They cannot face the cruelty
They all just turn away
And so it goes on all the time
All through the night and day
From birth to death is cruelty
Its suffering its strain
And this gentle farmer
Won’t be doing it again

He retained his heartfelt wish
To love his pigs and care
He talked to them and told them
With them he did share
His heartfelt thoughts
He cries their tears
Watch the film and see
The last pig is sad affair
But a living testimony

To the old ways
