Disloyalty and how we suffer at your hands

We are known  as man’s best friend

that’s what I was led to feel

but certainly from my experience

I don’t believe its real

so let me fill you in a bit

on how this has made me

feel about what I believe

is true disloyalty

I was a puppy years ago

and was sold to a guy, he

drove a truck

and lived his life

and I saw rapidly

he left me in his yard a lot

chained up to a post

it seems I was regarded as a guard dog

and my host

expected me to sit out there

in all weathers and be

his fucking guard dog

snarling at everyone

I did see

There was no cover for me

and the winter wind did bite

the water he left out for me

was iced up

at the height

of winter

that was every day

I couldn’t stand the pain

of being in that wind all day

and also in that rain

now and then he would throw me, a lump of meat

and I

would gnaw at it for several days

but I could not rely

on him to feed me regularly

neglected  I became

mentally unstable

and I haven’t felt the same

since, I have to tell you

I escaped one day when he

undid the chain  I  just ran off

sick of his loyalty

that was when things all went wrong

forced out on the street

I realized the horrors there

its so hard to compete

with existing strays, the forest

is a place but also there

are dangers  that are really bad

and really its not fair

having scant regard for a species

that lives alongside you

is tantamount to objectionable

but what can I dog do

indignity and humiliation

happens all the time

you feel unloved and put upon

and wonder if the climb

is really worth the effort

you, despise those who  try

and harm you and disarm you

and not care if you die

and they do, they stoop and smile

and offer possibly a bone

then kick you in the ribs

and scream expletives at you

that’s when you know you are alone

you know they have no love for you

that’s when you up and go

the human tribe are seldom

honorable

and that much, you know

a women once I came to know

adored me I could tell

she fed me though she hadn’t much herself

her life was hell

but she spent whatever she had

on buying food for me

and she showed me how she loved me

and just wanted to be

helpful caring loving

stroking brushing me

that’s when I thought back to the trucker

guy and I could see

there are folk that are closer to our species

and they care

the majority though are laggards

and still so unaware

possibly agree to this

so what does a dog do

neglected lost and suffering

the vagaries about
