Topeng Monyet ( performing monkeys of Indonesia)

The rainforests are extensive

a wilderness of  trees

branches inter twining

its the same reprise

we hear it and we feel it

the monkeys feel it too

complex social groups

that do what these groups

always do

care for one another

but sadly, what we see

is around 3000 captured

every year

consigned to be

taken from their feral state

and shipped into the town

and in the human squalor

many of them drown.

for its there that abject torture

becomes their way of life

6 months training

made to walk

like humans

all that strife

of being tied, their head upright

their hands behind their backs

stretched and stressed

torture at best

these the awful facts

most of them are babies

they are sold off to

research clinics

in universities

and of course they do

test on them

more torture

more evil

its the case

that the most evil

sods on earth

comes from the human race

other are sold as pets

many die a death

the rest  they do the training

and then each and every breath

is on the street low down

where cars pump out

the lead and smoke

they breathe this muck

into their lungs

which really is no joke

dressing them in dolls clothes

they wander here and there

breathing in the particulates

in the polluted air

they dance do tricks

ride mini motor

bikes

for tourists who

apparently are fascinated

by what monkeys do

they cannot see beyond

their noses

at the torture and the pain

for 5 to 10 years they do this

over and over again

when they will become aggressive

and be sold to restaurants who

sell the exotic meats on

to customers who do

pay the highest prices

for monkey meat and they

were the most unfortunate

creatures anyway

JAAN an organisation

wants to ratify

the laws to stop this happening

and to rescue and defy

those traders and those people

who trap these monkeys

and

rescue them and send them back

to an  a big island

where they can get back to their roots

not ply the streets in town

they can form their social groups

and not in our squalor drown
