Having been in cages all our life
treading on each other
every day
feeling those wire floors
rips our feet to shreds
the smell the blood the snot
the way we pay
our feathers ripped and torn
and friends here dying
our food was very poor
and maggots came
now to have our freedom
and be in a nice shed
and walk out in the snow
our hearts aflame
to feel the white snow on our feet
its gentle
its wet and cold
but gentle I can say
the wind gets up
and really puffs our feathers
but freedom is the dream
and its ours today
that ghastly place
the smell it got inside of us
we coudn’t even lay down
for a while
other birds would peck us
sheer frustration
and the men there
anytime they could defile
us and did
real brutes to us
those humans
but now we have been rescued
and we know
there are some lovely humans
not all of them are crap
so being out there
in the lovely snow
today has given us
something else to think about
flapping our wings
and stretching our legs
feels great
our minds are being cleansed
of all those cages
and I suppose in essence
it was good we had to wait
for now we feel remarkable and comforted
to be around this barn and know we can
walk about whenever we feel we want to
free range and not be harmed by any man
