Bats and their unfortunate inclusion in horror fiction

Fiction has taken side swipes
at Wolves and of course Bats
they entered through the horror portal
somewhat like the Gnats, the Rats even
the Cats all sounding similar its true
fiction clearly did it and has been seen to do

Bats are seen or rather unseen really for they fly
at night and live in places dark
great armies of them try
to wrestle with the darkness
and carry out the claim
of polishing off the insect hordes
which might somehow inflame

those insect souls who suffer
as vanquished souls they must
be swallowed in their billions
and transformed into dust
uniqueness is a virtue but unseen, souls
clearly can
realise the complexity
created by one man

Bram Stoker lit the fuse
and Bats blood sucking antics
were
paired with damsels in distress
fiction did infer
it somewhat clouded the thoughts of many
and changed so many minds
to think of them as vampires
an evil which enshrines

their place
in fact in Hollywood the vampire movies they
appealed to that fear factor
and again the Bats did pay
in reality they are wonderful
exposed to so much doubt
but able to create a life
a sort of coming out

great armies stretch across the sky
when humans tend to be
recounting all those nightmares
under duvets seemingly
a bit like frogs and toads
they do consume their body weight
in insects that consume our grains
at an alarming rate

so Bats really are our saviour
But Big Pharma probably
sees them as a competitor
and therefore possibly
goes along with the fiction
promotes it through and through
Bats seen in a bad light
is a negative come true

they are delightful creatures
in every single way
they very seldom harm us
and they have had to pay
a huge price for fiction
has painted them so black
whether that was intentional
it has been quite an attack

hopefully as time passes
they will be seen again
as angels dressed in nightime clothes
who willnever be a bane
on ours or anybody elses lives
for as I’ve said
they are our closest ally
when we’re tucked up in our bed
