A little about turtles and their problems in the oceans ( dedicated to Julie Meat Out Blackw whom I met on the ether today)

Its a really frightful practice
seine nets
a corporate way
conceived in some sick mind
to catch as much
and some pay
the piper for the pleasure
but sadly what we see
is by-catch
which is costly to
the creatures of the sea

going after tuna
those mercury ridden souls
some of which are in sharp decline
but clearly they are the goals
the corporates subscribe to
and sadly what we see
is what is known as by-catch
but its victims, actually

the Leatherback is one such soul
that gets hooked up in the seine
the netting made of filament
its fine and so again
in the ocean bobbing there
other species tend
to be lured in amongst it all
thats how they meet their end

may be its unintentional
but the seine nets are not thought out
its what happens, so often
when no one thinks about
the wide world
and the other species
now who share the sea
and to sacrifice them just to
catch the tuna must not be

but the turtle does appear
to be a victim
its leathery carapace
can seemingly
get hooked up and then
they die from starvation
that has to be a shocking
tragedy

Turtles love to eat the
many jelly fish
and plastic waste and seine nets
floating free
look a bit like jelly fish
and consuming either one
will clearly make the turtle
sick, they be
fooled by what appears
within their eye sight
unsuspecting of some human waste
with joints for teeth
you can understand their
frustration
jetsum and its a problem
that is faced

back to corporate ships
and fishing tackle
its lethal in the sea
for turtles who
swallow up the plastic
which chokes them very quickly
some discard it
but haven’t got a clue
how dangerous it becomes
immersed in water
what it tends to looks like
in the sea
its easy to be fooled
and many are appalled
by dead and dying turtles
constantly

I think we all
must pay greater attention
to what we do with plastic bags
we use
using them as bin liners
apparently is cheaper
but some where else a creature
we abuse

its not that we set out to do this
no one does
its just once in the environment
they blow
here and there and end up
in the ocean
where plastic dead zones
suddenly do grow

the turtle is now having a rather
awful time
with so much garbage in the sea
really there’s no rhyme
nor reason why they ought to know
that, that jelly over head
is really a supermarket bag
and if they eat it they will be dead
