The Steam Fair at Potten End

The sun had got his hat on
on, Potten End green
two sprawling fields
a truly undulating scene
a steam fair, I could not
imagine, the place
so decided to go over
and just show my face.

I drove in and paid
and drove down through the trees
and up on the hill
which for me, well did please
and entered a field
where the tanks and the trucks
camouflage green
costing quite a few bucks
no doubt, real old beauties
made now to shine
proudly they stood
and all in a line

a shire horse
a big
handsome soul
with white mane
he stood eating carrots
and looking vain
onto the fair
a coconut shy
a candy floss stall pink sticks
in the sky
hot greasy Do nuts
cholesterol and all
and an old bloke from Royston
“sit down lad” did bawl
“this is my furniture
and you could do
with a rest I can see that
so sit down will you”
I did, it was kind of him
I sat a while
and exchanged some banter
for he had some style

a stunt man, a straight jacket
and he escaped
ice creams and horses
and someone all taped up
a great backdrop
of green trees and sky
sheep in a pen
watching us lot walk by
Hello I said to them
I’m a sheep too
born in the year
that sheep wander through
Barrr they exclaimed
I don’t drink I did say
Barrr they exclaimed
No thanks not today
I wandered slowly
back to the car
then back home to sit
writing odes from afar
