The Goddess and the Hare

Alice met a Rabbit
But the Goddess met a Hare
it was standing by a stile
not going anywhere
gazing out across the fields
dreaming of a Doe
lying somewhere in some burrow
keeping her profile low
of course he hadn’t met her yet
but envisaged she would be
an Angora or one of those Blue’s
a pretty little she
he always came up here to look
it was his favourite place
and suddenly he was aware
of somebody else’s face
Its the Goddess she just stumbled
on the Hare that summers day
and both of their eyes met
and to each other they did say

Hello Goddess I am Hare
long legs and big ears
Are you the Dragon Goddess
bright eyes and diamond tears
Yes Hare that is me alright
I live over yonder
In the cottage near the Gade
and of it, I grow fonder
you’r always welcome Mr Hare
if your, ever over
My Cleaning Doe grows watercress
and collects the wildest clover

I love the clover freshly picked
its juices are real sweet
it kind of makes me sort of feel
much lighter on my feet
rather than climb the gates or stiles
what I tend to do
Is fly over them,I take a run
I guess a bit like you

Round here the woods
are bold and green
the holly berries red
I love to shimmy down the Birch
and now that has been said
You are Miss truly beautiful
and all that has been said
before about you, I agree
tis a lucky soul, who’d wed

so sweet a lady, and so fair
I hope we meet again
I do come up here often
I use this space to train
and what of you I don’t remember
seeing you before
have you lived here very long?
9 years, and I’m very sure
Its one of 16 cottages
now who could ask for more
He seemed infatuated
as he stared into her eyes
they did appear so smoky
but clearly she was wise
she knew of great earth’s magic
and medicinal flowers
she sat up on the heath at night
for very many hours
her pet owl on her shoulder
her dragon at her shoe
lighting fire flies who flew by
painted red and blue

The Goddess often talks of this
chance meeting, unaware
that the Hare is so enamoured with
her raven locks of hair
with her stately eyes
and wondrous smile
and the diction of a lark
the amazing Dragon Goddess
who on him had made her mark

He couldn’t sleep for ages
or even sort of rest
his head would touch the pillow
and you can guess the rest
he ‘d sink into oblivion
all bottled up with fear
but sleep his head was full of her
and how she brought him cheer

Now the Goddess reminiscing
in her cottage by the Gade
what had become, of Mr Hare
and his Leveret brigade
he was such a handsome fellow
with his long legs and big ears
she was sure he was al’right
but felt some diamond tears

roll slowly down her pretty face
and wet the ground where she
was standing and a flash of light
and the Hare was dutifully
standing in her shadow
Goddess he did say
I heard you call my name
and I came here right away

That’s very kind the Goddess said
I’d, like you to be
living in the garden near my cottage
there’s a tree
A Yew
its very stout and tall
and will
provide protection without doubt
the gardens full of clover
and there’s lots more plants about

I can share my Dragon stories
this Harem we can share
We can eat Harerissa sandwiches
and both be more aware
of the harebells and the Bluebells
and the hairy old man’s beard
that grows along the country lanes
and apparently is feared
the medicines of wood and vale
Come hear my Hare come here
I feel it would be good for both
of us to be sincere

The Hare agreed to come to share
The Goddesses abode
He brought hair raising stories
When he lived by a main road
and both of them though different
found love I hear and they
cuddled up on stormy nights
and passed their time away.
