Mahler 6 at the Barbican

Mahler 6 at the Barbican was amazing
Though people speak of “darkness” I saw Light
Contemplation with romantic overtones
The great Austrian Landscape was in sight
The mountains and the freedom just to persevere
Walking in those realms, that made him feel
The glockenspiel, the Cowbells in the distance
Two harps, and a huge hammer that was real
A mighty sound to perhaps mimic a wood axe
Pictures he was painting pictures, and
Splashes of rich colour, filled my every thought
Drums and Cymbals,liberation spanned
The mountains, I could see them
The freedom that he’d conjured
from the sound
Sweeping strings his outpouring around
Pensive, melancholic was my take on it
Expansive. the piano brushed aside
A Celeste, A whip and melodic horns a singing
Echoes of the places he could hide
Excitement, rapturous moods an Arian power base
Sadness and a reticence to play
I come back to a contemplative desiring
Whimsical in parts he tries to say
Poetic and a satisfaction following
Like fragrant Hazel blossoms out in May
Elation struck from sorrow
Clearly it did borrow
A marvellous half hour ending anyway
Heralding a glorious achievement
An exultation almost to the soul
Lamenting on his lot
How life had clearly not
Dealt him the richness and real control

The conductor gave it everything
Czech born he was great
He eased out of the gifted one’s
Gems at such a rate
The audience and I was one
Were overjoyed to hear
A wondrously moving Symphony
With such passion, it was clear
Nicholas Korth invited me
I came to hear his horn
Expressive, of such quality
Like fields of waving corn
As sunlight shines down onto them
The psyche shot away
Austria was there before me
In the broad light of day
