The brothers of Nari Chapter 9

Lone and I decided
it would take about a day
to go and see some friends
of ours Grey Wolf and Bold, away
across the Silver Mountain
and so a break of day
We skirted down past
Grey Eagles camp
and out across the bay
Along the marsh at Bringham
into the forest dark,
across the border
by the tall cascade
It was a long long way.
Trees grew close together
a lot of spindly birch
and Holly with its powerful thorns,
we always are in search
of earthworms,voles
and anything.
a snack to keep us strong
and then we both heard
a strange yelp
but something sounded wrong
We came upon a thicket
and there before our eyes,
A darling little puppy dog
a proper little prize
Hanging off a wolf trap
tied on with some cord
Live bait to attract us wolves
a nice fresh warm reward
The little soul was yelping
telling us that we
Must keep away
he was a lure
but we went down to see
Keep away he yelped
this trap is mean’t
for one of you
Well there was no way
we would eat him
And we saw it as danger too

So we used our ingenuity and freed the little soul
How brave he was,
stuck in the dark
but still in such control
Able to warn us,
having the gall to do that
We thought, we
Would save the little critter
try to set him free
We do not eat dogs,
they are deemed as family
and so we took him to see
Grey and Bold
They lived in a cave too,
its entrance underneath a tree,
a great long tunnel
that was very cold
But it opened out into
a large rock area
With stalactites
and crystals all aglow
And there was Grey and Bold
with all their family
Sitting calmly on a ledge below

We rubbed noses,
sniffed each other
kissed and generally
Chatted about the old days
for a while
Then realised the time
was passing rapidly
We needed to put in
that extra mile
When we left the entrance
it was pitch black
The moon was masked in clouds
and so we ran
Back to Silver Mountain
where the wind was coming up
And light snow
as we got there it began
An owl or too said twit a taroo
it startled us
We each caught several voles
along the way
Chomping on their bones
with canine overtones
And got back home
just at the break of day
It had been quite a journey,
but it was good to see our friends
We were happy we had met
that pup and hope that’s where it ends
Clearly the men of IOWA the hunting mob descend
lower than lowest low
to trap and pin our friend
On that trap just
to lure us in,
man certainly succeeds
in reaching lows of thoughtfulness
To match those dreadful deeds
