The Southern giant pouched Rat
An intelligent nocturnal
Highly trainable so we hear
With an excellent sense of smell
Saving lives in Africa
With a marvellous perceptivity
Fastidious of temperament
Impressible and mindful of
Vital and vivacious
A realness and a genuineness
Authentic and meticulous
Well founded and well grounded
Alertness and awareness
A level headed shrewdness
A breadth of mind that’s sound
Click receive banana sweet
The narrative that one can eat
That memory of the moment
An edifying memory
Having the capacity to associate
The mastery
Taught to smell the TNT
Explosive charges
One two three
Land mines buried
Due to war
On farmlands
Where so many more
Are stood on and of course then
maim
Peasant farmers
Spoils of war
Mozambique where more and more
Amputee’s and tragedy
Are now safeguarded thankfully
One such Rat from Tanzania
Trained up by Nico
Who has called
Dear “Miss Marple
Her ability
Olfactory mapping in her brain
After months of constant training
The APOPO Lab has in the main
Happened here a hero rat
That walks the mined fields
Identifying
TNT the smell is fixed
Profundity of thought relying
Lives are being saved now daily
Metal detectors clear top soil
These champions of consciousness
And extra sensory perception
Continually they toil
Up and down the mine field margins
Awakening their senses they
Get a kind of sensuousness
More and more, day after day
Posterity they kind of feel it
A spore a tread a vapour trail
Their weight of body safe as houses
Their shining light a wizard’s grail
Man and beast can feed with splendour
The shared knowledge consummately
The soundness of a nocturnal mind
Creating a lucidity
Rational and reasonable
An adaptation unquestionably.
