Kolinka

She just kind quietly sat by the door
at the back of the restaurant
her head in her hands
all the worries flood in
a cigarette burns
from her dry shrivelled top lip
the next 5 hours shift
is about to begin

she’s exhausted already,
she thinks of Alberto
she left behind sleeping
his sheet on the floor
hand in hand she could now be
walking in wet grass
instead of just waiting
by this open door

which might as well be
Steel with great heavy padlocks
for she is imprisoned, a maiden alas
she has to work 5 hours
at least to earn something
without it, no heat
for she has to buy gas

so its wait on the tables
smile at the diners
wash up and watch as her hands
go bright red
clean down the cooker
dry up the glasses
put out the bottles
and dream of her bed

Down in the cellar
theres all sorts of spiders
and she is just so scared
of these little brutes
Alberto’s past caring
He’s been a seafaring
man, rats and spiders
and man eating newts

she brings home some bacon
some fresh bread she’s taken
a bottle of rose, some cash in her purse
Alberto’s still sleeping
Kolinka starts weeping
the job in the restaurant
its true could be worse
