Statesmanship

One expects from one’s leaders
A sage like degree
A modicum of sense
Whose authority
Would seldom be questioned
A wise man a sage
Never a featherbrain
Not up to their age

A wizard whose intellect
Comes shining through
A good orator
Whatever they do
Have a far-sighted vision
With their feet on the ground
And a good sense of humour
And to Be coherent and sound

A simpleton no that will never do
Needs soundness of mind
Able to construe
The facts they are given
And clearly needs care
And be mindful of others
Whose space they might share

The qualities stand out
The statesman like they
Must anticipate well
And be true every day
Raw recruits never
Bumblers no
Be pliant yet powerful
When always on show

This Skripal poisoning
Has blown a hole
In perceived reality
It so lacks soul
The facts do not add up
The evidence stinks
It was all very serious
And now me thinks

It is unravelling
Before our eyes
Clearly somebody is telling lies
It makes us a laughing stock
That I can say
With Mr Bean and pink panther
And hindrance at play

To me I was worried
The war song and cry
The high level sending home
Of diplomats why?
With evidence lacking
A bold front won’t do
To me it was brazenness
Really all through

An insulting outcome
The belligerant stance
Of May And of Johnson
They had the chance
But they blew it
And now we are
In a parlous state
Getting punitive re action
Which of course isnt great

PUtin was statesmanlike
Corbyn was too
they used their good office
And remained mindful all through
It has been proposterous
How Boris did act
Basing the argument
Without any fact

Now there’s a tussle
That won’t go away
Its a big war of words
And Ink slinging today
Apparently a professor
Who is from Cornell
Says his student could make it
And make it well

Novichok! Really
Worse than VX
On the door handle
With all of the checks
The story is meaningless
And both victims appear
For whatever reason
To be better its clear

There is hardly a mystery
Now More a lie
The blundering Boris
Must ask himself why
It almost got to fisticuffs
But for those who
Were amazingly statesmanlike
And good and true
