The biggest land animals
Thats what they are
Elephants
In many ways a big star
In the animal kingdom
But surely today
Are suffering terribly
Now anyway
They are family orientated
As we all know
Matriarchal as such
Their compassion
Does grow
They have feelings for children
And the herd as a whole
It is one great big family
Where each know their role
Greatly intelligent
With memories long
Massively heavy
And wonderfully strong
Complete vegetarians
Gentle and kind
They know how to nurture
This is underlined
Man
Is inhuman to elephants, he
Beats them, he is cruel to them
They were born free
To roam through the wilderness
Gently to sail
Through life on their journeys
Their very long trail
He traps them and abuses them
For his entertainment
Makes them give rides
And ponder away
He beats them with bull hooks
He starves them and chains them
This is his treatment
And everyday
Circus he makes them
Do tricks for the audience
A wild proud elephant
Distressed and sad
Climbing on chairs
And riding a bicycle
This so upsetting
And ingloriously bad
See here this elephant
Stolen from its mother
From its family of mentors
To work in this way
Ferrying children around an enclosure
This its reward at the end of the day
A life of such boredom
Its heavy going
Walking on hard ground
No match for its weight
Destroying its feet and legs
And its great mind
Is this its journey
Is this its fate
Man un kind you are
Explicitly hopeless
You lack true affection
For one such as I
I am torn from my mother
By sister my brother
And here in your prison
Am expected to ply
Children your children
What is their lesson
To feel my strong back
Tween their legs
Feel my heart
Bursting beneath them
And me a wild elephant
Relinquishing my power
Right from the start
Will they remember
The ride that you paid for
And will they know of my suffering here
Will they imagine the susceptibility
Or are they unconscious already
Its clear
They were impervious to the experience
Blind to it deaf to it
A total waste
It bore no impact
Apart from my tedium
This is a problem
That has to be faced
I am a means to an end
The child’s ride
Didn’t mean that much
They deep inside
Were probably thinking
I liked them on me
Perhaps when they grow up
Then they will be
Aware that us elephants
Hate giving rides
It does hurt our feet
And in our insides
We weep at the true insensitive play
Man puts us through
Each hour of each day
And there is never regret
No remorse not that we
Can feel in our hearts
We lament this and be
Rueful in many ways
Our joylessness
And our low spirits
They don’t care a less
They cant feel our fatigue
Atrabilious,v we
Are heavy hearted
That man cannot see
Cant see we are care worn
And wretched with woe
We just must keep going
However low
On his treadmill of life
On his irksome of trails
Down his tedious path
Where everything fails
Our darkness he won’t share
The monotonous way
Each inglorious yawn
At the end of the day
Our ponderous sluggishness
He cannot read
All his banality
Where does it lead
A pedestrian gait
A boorishness too
Man you are vulgar
Yes all the way through
