She was the girl who loved animals
she
had that passion for Afrika
a visionary
she knew in her heart
that out there far away
was a land where the animals
lived and did play
she had so much passion
and inquisitiveness
innately she realized
she did possess
some understanding
of primates for she
was going to Afrika
and she would see
when she left school
she worked here and there
got some experience
earning, aware
she had to save
if she wanted to go
to Afrika that was a her dream
as we know
she sailed to Mombasa
when just 23
on her own with her dream
for it was going to be
a lifetime for her
for that’s what she does
she commits herself fully
she just had that buzz
that emotion that drive
that spirit the verve
it took some real courage
but she had that nerve
she had that within her
that spark and that fire
and Afrika called her
it was her desire
She met Louis Leakey
a meeting of minds
the universe brought them
together
the finds
they had between each other
was great
he was her mentor
which did then create
such a partnership really
of thoughts and creation
some might say this was
her true salvation
all the time listening
all the time learning
all the time passionate
and so discerning
with that basic vision
and emotional care
she went off to
study the Chimapanzees
there
near Lake Tanganyika
the forests there where
groups clearly lived and died
where she could share
social inter action
her studies would be
real and alive for with them
she could see
how they lived
how they played
their bonds and the way
their social activity
helped them each day
Her mentor was able
to get her to be
at Cambridge to get her doctorate
she
had no degree but in 3 years or so
she managed it
and so now scientifically
she would be noticed respected
we know
her work with the primates
her research did grow
and she was immersed in it
it was her thing
she loved what she was doing
and how it did bring
so much satisfaction
the knowledge was there
she had to work hard
but she was so aware
her patience was amazing
her observation was keen
she saw and she felt
and she learned for she’s been
around them she’s almost become one
for she
was so fascinated
she observed them closely
received their acceptance
and gave hers to them
this trust and this bond
was how it did stem
in her heart in their hearts
she was their friend
and through all of the years
their rights did defend
The 3rd day of April 1934
when she took her first breath
and knew then what’s more
Afrika called her that
song she could hear
and it has sustained her
and brought her such cheer
The Chimpanzees clearly
have so come to know
Jane as their mentor
Jane seemed to know
so much about them
and they about her
for she gave so much to them
and really they were
parts of her family
thats what she felt
I am sure in the forest
sometimes she knelt
down and just counted her blessings
for she had believed and achieved
her true destiny
Happy Birthday to you from
