A Dairy is no place for babies

Gabriele Meurer former veterinarian
Surgeon to UK abattoirs
tells us truths that sicken me
something I hoped I’d never see
some Farmers crack me up
and leave such scars
on what is humanity
in point of fact
insensitive and crass
I have to say
it really is unpalatable
to investigate and write
a poem on this subject
now today

Cows with babies
inside their very being
ready to give birth
but seemingly
the farmer where he seems
to be is at
a crossroads in his thinking
and really without blinking
whisks them off to slaughter
imagine that

How on earth can someone
really do this
present for slaughter
mothers who will be
giving birth in days
I am beside myself
the pain I feel
so deep inside of me

to think that what can
only be financial
marks the end of a frantic mother
who
has gone through maybe 8 months
of sheer torture
and on the point of birth
she’s chopped into

hanging on the hook of death
she swings in a slow arc
her infant kicking desperately
now making its mark
and at that point
some ghastly butcher
slashes the mothers throat
and gets caught in the avalanche
of blood and gore
I note

you probably can’t believe this
this inhumane idea
how any farmer anywhere
can decide this, its not clear
anywhere inside of me
how anyone would dare
to argue with creation
who clearly is aware

to then cut out the trachea
the mother still aware
in the most awful agony
in the direst of despair
as the ghastly dreadful butcher
than pulls her baby free
and there it lies pulsating
its unbridled infamy

I shudder at the thought
that this is happening a lot
and the baby is then so dispatched
and dumped there on the spot
disrespectful bastards
everyone that saw
these babies struggling in their mothers
precious blood and gore

And DEFRA is aware of this
heartless brutes I say
A Government of sadists
who chose to look away
the butchers must be sickened by it
even those who do
this kind of work
must choke inside their own guts
that we screw

tiny unborn babies
used for leather oh so fine
for our ladies softer handbags
that look and smell divine
well ladies if you ever were Mothers
please now see
what your bloody bag was made from
and cry along with me

as for the dairy farmers
who kill their male calves, they
also kill their mothers
and their babies and they say
nothing, no one knows this
this filthy trade in life
milk I wouldn’t touch the stuff
its pure, its liquid strife

so much death and torture
so that we can sup the teat
we can kiss the udder
oh yes we are discreet
its all washed in some carton
and we add it to our tea
but we stole it from the babies
who were murdered actually

I hang my head in shame for you
the ignorant who look away
who will not hear the ululation
every single bloody day
those tears roll from those mothers
and mix in with their blood
as the butchers cuts them open
and we all then hear the thud

of the baby on the slaughterhouse floor
writhing in such pain
born by surgical prowess
butchered and allowed to drain
this is inglorious treatment
this is the vilest woe
this is what is happening
and all of you must know

each time you eat your ice cream
or your cheese on toast
remember the babies dying
those sweet souls we love most
remember the butcher butchering
remember the Farmers who
are killing the bloody badgers now
with nothing much else to do

I am so glad I am vegan
some 40 years and I
am happy when I lay my head
down and I close each eye
I think about the little cows
on the common every day
and I enter into a peaceful sleep
knowing they didn’t pay

anything for my muesli
for milk is not for me
I would not steal it from the calves
for me that cannot be
and now to hear the dairies
are sending pregnant mums
into the bloody slaughterhouse
their babes ripped out of their tums

I am sorry for me its over
what man un kind does here
leads me to look away from Farmers
moaning when I hear
them going on about Badgers
and loving their livestock, I
will remind myself what liars
they are and really why

anyone believes all that
sad claptrap anyway
why people cannot put two and two
together and then just say
we know their killing babies
born and unborn and we
do not care a monkeys
about them
let them be

and realise just whereabouts
