Salisbury Plain

Sarum Plain
Dr Salisbury Plain
An elevated expanse of chalk
Where in the eye of man can see
These massive broad green downs
Now be
What lies beneath this historic veil
All manner of English relics free
Neolithic accoutrements
To think but why the MOD
And to Stonehenge seven miles away
From Salisbury
The Avon Valley lay
Peaceably great blocks of stone
Some prostate and some pointing high
Carefully hewn from whence they came
A shepherd and his sheep look on
Seated on the grass they do
A tranquil place where heavenly light
Awakens spirits
