The Avebury Shocker

We had visited Avebury

it had been a wet day

an on our way home

There  had been a delay

the SatNav  was playing up

as we drove back

It told us to leave  the main road

to a track

To  a road without lights

a few  houses on the right

we drive slowly down there

into a wet night

further  and further

the road narrowing, and

on both sides a bog

and very wet land

in the middle was grass

and gradually we

Got to a field

we were lost tragically

we couldn’t turn around

we had to reverse

back all the way

it was just like  some curse

both  sides  a bog we had to drive slow

and straight,  no mistakes

Or in the bog we would go.

it took nearly an hour

fear took a hold

it was raining hard

and very cold

the bog became wetter

The fear  in me too

made me shake  a bit

Wondering what  i would do

if I got stuck  in the bog

all night in the dark

possibly sinking

no place to park

i carried on slowly

over an hour

till I got  out of the track

and got back some power

turned off Sat Nav

and drove home relieved

That  I had got myself out of that

and relieved

laid down to sleep

pleased to be back

since then

I have remembered  that old muddy track
