Threatened damage to a Neolithic site

Traffic flow through Chipping Norton
HGV’s and air quality
It’s been suggested a neolithic site
Nearby substantially
Should see the road
Running north north west
widened which ‘tis said
Is a Way of improving Air quality
And apparently has led

A Councillor to speculate
A neolithic site
Is worth risking,
for the Present
How could that be right
Our history is National
It’s vital and it must
Be preserved forever
Protected by the Trust
The whispering knights
A burial chamber
The Kings Stone
And we see
The Kings Men stones
Uniquely placed
At The age of constancy

Oolitic limestone
Taking some 4000 hours to build
This a unique monument
Which of course does yield
Truly many visitors
From almost everywhere
And To even think of damaging
This site, so much despair.
Is created to believers
Who frequent and desire
To walk these hallowed grounds
And share their rituals
In a fire
of what is true emotion
And dedication they
Druids come and solemnly
Pass the time of day

Substantial and essential
It’s tangible it’s there
Polarities apparent
Incomparable we share
Sincerity and genuineness
A meeting place they be
The sabbat’s are engaging
With a true integrity.
As to whether neolithic
Ancestors Mind that much
If we save new generations
And Really try to touch
Their need above a pile of ancient stones
Which goes to show
The ignorance and arrogance
Of some people in the know

Our heritage and history
Means little when one is caused to think
Of trucks and delivering mail order
And high streets on the brink
They keep increasing business rates
And shops keep closing down
And deliveries by mail order
Are killing the town
But just destroy the heritage
The ancient sites, to me
Is sacrilege its lacking understanding
For they see
Little in the way of things
In orderliness and harmony
There is no prioritisation
To a logical degree

These stones have stood
There aeons
A holy and sacred site
Attracting Druids and others
Each sabbat and their right
Of access to such wonders
Must never be denied
Antiquity is a value
That should be borne
With pride

An Oxfordshire should realise
Of Long Compton’s history
Rollrights need protecting
Not threatened now to be
Cast aside so traffic
Can tear down country lanes
We must preserve our culture
For therein lies the gains
Listen to George Lambrick
Chairman of the Trust
Who spends long hours
Protecting and managing
We must
Look and realise the timelessness
Of ancient sites
Dotted around our landscape
And really reaching heights
Of knowledge and understanding
Of the legends of the piece
Instead of inviting dissonance
And breaches of the peace

This is what makes our country
Great
Our history is long
Our ancestors we must respect
For all of us belong
In the fallen shadows
Their deeds accomplished much
We really have to show respect
And to not be out of touch

I call on all of you this day
To realise that we
Druids seekers people
We all choose to be
Against the ruination
Of artifact’s and you
Should care about posterity
And when and how you do
What you do in the Council
To consider another way
Of reducing contamination
By making polluters pay.

A quiet lane clothed in simple trees
Atop a hill, of fields
Staring down to Chipping Norton
To the sight that yields
A beautiful expression
A musical embrace
The bird song and the crackling branches
An ancient site whose grace

Draws a wondrous light and shade
A vividness all see
A place to have a picnic
And relax and try to be
Much closer to Nature
Under the great sky
That has looked down on the
Roll right stones
For an age and does know why
