Seventy miles from Cedar City
I was told there was
An Eagle by the roadside
That was just because
A trucker seemed had seen it
And as I was asked to go
And, rescue the critter
As someone who should know
Really what to do with it
And so I drove to see
And tbere it was on a dusty path
Really so skinny
Clearly it was starving
In a very awful way
I collected it
And brought it home
A juvenile I’d say
Its what I do I rescue
But he was in bad shape
I needed to get him home fast
There was no way he would escape
Back home i had a look at him
As lethargic as could be
Not a good sign for an eagle
That should be bold and free
On the edge of death I reckoned
But I had to try
Made a concoction of nutrients
And some dead mice which is why
I say and gave the tonic
Through a small syringe
And hand fed all the mouse
It was a deadly binge
The eagle just about
Was swallowing so a good thing I
Did and then decided that all night
I would have to try and repeat
The nutrition and the feed
To strengthen this poor soul
And did so gently talking to the bird
Taking the role
Of helping it to progress
Soaking the mouse in the nutrients too
Clearly very very weak
But I just had to do
Everything I could to save this eagle
But alas
by morning it had
Joined its ancestors in the great morass
It had given up i was just too late
Head down its how they Are
Masters of the sky in fact
But unable to spar
With me to even lift its head
I guess it had to be
I had done my best to save a soul
That was too far gone
So free
As a bird an enormous spirit
She quietly did expire
Fly out of her
Feathered state
For this world had become dire
Up into the pearly clouds
With her ancestral flock
And had left her corpse behind
Which for me was quite a shock
