That thought process
That one day grabs you
And you have to look and see
Really what you are doing
Does it feel right actually
20 acres 10 fine cows
1 bull and some calves too
Some have to go to market
And you cogitate you do
Particularly when you watch the BULL
Following the truck
He sees you take his family
And really that does suck
The animal is caring
His empathy it shows
He is suffering, to see cows going
Yes Of horse he knows
They will not be coming back
And his heart is full of woe
And he chases and he races
And he also wants to go.
When you see that every single time
As a lady farmer you
Feel for every single calf that’s born
Of course you do
If you are selling milk to humans
The calves will have to go
You make the stock excuses
And kidnap the calves the flow
Of emotion it is constant
reminded by the cow
She will chase the wayward calves
Her babies really how
And we in essence take them
Kidnap them and run
And she will yes run after them
And watching her has done
Me in
and got me thinking
This isn’t reverie
It’s truthfully a broken heart
She suffers tragically
Ungulates are ruminants
They chew the cud and think
Pondering and contemplating
They are close to the brink
They do seem to get over it
But actually we feel
That’s just us conceptualising
For them it’s very real
even the few chickens
That wander here and there
They wake us in the morning
They lay eggs everywhere
They really are no trouble
And it’s easy they are friends
They greet us and the meet us
And if they are sick it sends
Us into, well a worried state
And the vet what he will say
Is send them off to market
Get some more another day
It’s being inconsiderate
Or absent-minded but we
In farming have to realise
Really they now be
Actually part of the family
And to wring their necks
And kill
There comes a time in life
When their blood you cannot spill
And so from meat and dairy
To VEGANISM you
Cross the bridge to sanity
Your eyes begin to see
Your ears begin to hear
their voices
You understand what for
A sanctuary for the sick cow
Whose leg is very sore
Again the veterinary
Bluntly says you must
Put her down sell the meat
She is a soul she’s just
Really a family member
You have feelings for her too
The medic man matter of fact
But really clueless to
The real force of the
The argument
When you suddenly see the light
The bull the cow
The chickens
It’s all there in plain site
All this time the sophistry
Had captured out your soul
You were just being parochial
It felt out of your control
But now the cow is moving on
To a sanctuary and she
Will make friends with a new set
Of animals and we
Can visit her from time to time
Enjoy her frantic joy
Rather than sell her flesh
And then try to employ
Someone else and another cow
We really have to say
We will grow fruit and vegetables
And they too
Will help us pay
whatever bills we have on hand
Our animals really are our friends
And now the fertile land is all
And the grief of loss just never ends
