“Lance”

Lance was looking poorly
Front and back leg torn
Left tied up and neglected
The flesh alas was worn
Bleeding terribly painful
Standing all the day
Just left there really to bleed out
Whilst most looked the other way

We came and we cleaned
Both legs so sore
Dressed them both
There on the floor
So weak so delicate
So extreme
So much worse than it might seem

A lot of rest A lot of care
Two months later
It is fair
To say he’s recovered
And likes to be
With the others gracefully
Chewing over the freshest grass
Once abused
But in a class
Of his own now

He has joined the pack
