Little Mary Bell

Society the bane of
Life’s experiences abroad
Mary Bell born into Hell
Existence her reward

A drunken aggressive father figure
A humbled prostitute mother
Living in a ScottsWood slum
In a family like no other

There was little or no affection
With isolation yours
An untimeliness of circumstance
For whatever cause

A child born in this mayhem
So much antipathy
Would probably go inside herself
A reactionary

Inquisitive and adventurous
But kind of lost at sea

She created a kind of camouflage
In the hope that she might break
The bonds that tied her mentally
And for her own sake

Developed an inventiveness
She needed that to be
For she saw herself as the youngest saddest
Soul in her family

Battles unreported tore her home apart
So switching off and entering her inner thoughts
Was a start
To escaping all the vileness
And her wandering about
The streets of old Newcastle
Was always worth a shout

She lived in a place called ScottsWood
A slum worthy of naught
Neighbours mostly petty thieves
For them their brand of sport

You watched your back
You feared the worst
And thus was where young Mary Bell
Lived and felt accursed

Who knows what sort of diet
She had one can but guess
It was bloody awful
Imbalanced and full on stress

The smell of puke and alcohol
And dogs mess everywhere
And her mothers frantic sexual bouts
To augment family care

And so young Mary streetwise
Found a friend in Norma bell
An innocent little child next door
Not especially bright as well

And the two got paired up
And Mary found her way
Of manipulating Norma
Who would look the other way

And so herstory tells us
These two began their jaunt
Mary was very intelligent
And attractive and their haunt

Was all around the area
And her big eyes came in play
People were drawn to look at her
But then often look away

She captivated people
And frightened people too
A cold stare put the wind up folks
She was kind of sanpaku

Mary killed two little boys
Strangled them Yes she
Favoured strangulation
For her possibly

She herself felt strangled
By her circumstances there
Always she was feeling
Like fighting coming up for air

With her sidekick Norma
And her supremacy
A sort of puppet master
Of seniority

She made all the decisions
Norma the supporting role
Whatever the reason
Both little boys
Lives were ended this their role

In life to be suspended
They were lost to kingdom come
Mary always denied the crime
In a way perhaps was numb

To the principle of Murder
She was lost in infamy
Of her circumstance a child recruit
Isolated tragically

From reality whatever that was
Utterly Disengaged within
Where there was only chaos
Translated by some as sin

And so began a sentence
In another place
For 12 years she was incarcerated
Lost without a trace

Remembering those little boys
The victims so to say
Strangled thus prevented
To breathe another day
That inevitability
That hope extinguished by
Someone else’s hands around
Your throat
Until you die

    Very sad, tragic in fact

  2. Rex says:

Watching the film one can feel there was not the urgency and care really from the authorities in those days its funny growing up in that era I never realised that until now.
