The dual carriageway

The dual carriageway
Is a fast stretch
Of road and it can be
Dangerous if obstructions
Suddenly drivers see

It happened we hear yesterday
A dog pounding away
And so the police decision
Was to run it down
Lets say
They let the dog continue
And collisions could ensue
Maybe a major pile up
And deaths what could they do

With all their bloody cameras
And tetra towers about
They could have closed a stretch of road
Why was that in doubt
So they identified two officers
With dogs and said that they
Should run the dog down at high speed
And do it without delay

Judgement and discretion
Adjudicators they
Became the judge and jury
And the executioner to pay
A price for being frightened
Not knowing what to do
Scared shitless just imagine that
And the police they run you through

For me that was loose thinking
An error in my book
Arrogance took over
Not a second look
A dog so what it was easier
Kill it with a car
Ensure the speed was fast enough
This is how they are

What if it was a little child
Or a cow how would they be
More sensitive more thoughtfulness
Or more anxiety
With helicopters in the sky
And warning lights on show
There has to be another way
To instruct cars to go slow

This was a true life drama
calling for some empathy
A frightened dog in panic mode
Needs calming actually
Chasing after the victim
And hitting it at speed
Also may have caused accidents
The indifference it does feed

Into the present day events
The apathy we see
Inflexible and unresponsive
And uncaring actually
Fear no doubt was evident
And,thinking it through
If Death could have been prevented
It was the best thing they could do

But judgement clearly wasn’t
At its best and this poor soul
Was regarded as a hazard
And the rashness of the role
At somebody’s discretion
Who knows whether they
Weighed it up or decided
Kill the dog is the only way

The story says the officers
Doing the dirty deed
Were dog lovers that tells me something
For dog lovers to succeed
In murdering a frighted dog
Running for its life
Gives me call to worry
Why create the strife

To me a certain hardness
Toward the animal this day
Who would have hoped for better
To be taken out this way
Not accidentally hit the dog
But go all out to kill
Such unpitying behaviour
The poor souls blood to spill

In the wrong place at the wrong time
Took the drama to a high
There is no absolution
For the innocent soul did die
Run down by a police car
Run down by design
They were doing their duty
With their conscience on the line

Lets hope they have all learned something
We share our space with those
Other earthlings living in the countryside
Suppose
A deer even a pedestrian
Fallen possibly
With CCTV everywhere
What would happen actually

Who made the decision
To kill the dog I wonder
Were they animal lovers too
Witnessing the thunder
As that dogs heart ran like the wind
Trying hard to see
Hopeful he could get off the road
And go home eventually
