Calves and their mothers

Science stands up and describes

the feelings of the cow

the mother who has

carried a baby yes and how

she got to that stage

induced by a hairy arm or two

plunged into her doing

what no one wanted to

inseminated she was

no love just nothing there

bull sperm though was introduced

and she was so aware

she carried this sweet baby

through the 9 months

and she saw

and felt the pain of birthing

like perhaps never before

her genuine ambition

a baby born of her

every cell she knew so well

she was able to concur

and then of course it happened

the only reason why

she had carried that baby

was just so it could die

it was all about the milk

production for those who

bought it at the market

maybe folk like you

with coddled brains

and senseless

reactions

may be so

taken in by liars

their margins just to grow

uncaring and uninterested

really unconcerned

for any love between them

nonchalance had turned

impassive to the miracle

indifferent to the cause

and inglorious  notoriety

humbled by a pause

behold the serf the villain

the rustic ploughman knob

uncivilised and uncultured

but able to use his gob

rips the calf from its mother

and carries it away

slings it in another pen

and makes both of them pay

crushed and dashed and broken

the bluster and disdain

he would stoop to anything

unfeeling of their pain

their rancour and resentment

and being torn away

at being left to grieve and whimper

at being made to pay

with all the worst intentions

the spitefulness abroad

the pitiless confusion

the birth was no reward

ill-wishing and so hurtful

unnatural to be sure

the bully came to do that

something both won’t ignore

the mother cries for ages

the baby also cries

scurrilous behaviour

who will realize

the blatant hurt within them

not the dairyman

all that he is doing

is according to his plan

milk production started

the human kind will sup

dress it up and sell it

watch margins go up and up

sell it to the industry

prevent the calf of course

if its male

its for the chop

may be a rennet source

but there is no forgiveness

no absolution here

the animals are suffering

the spitefulness and fear

justice there’s no justice

not in the human world

not in the bloody dairy

where little calves are hurled

its pure discrimination

justice is denied

her baby has been kidnapped

the baby is wide eyed

the wrongfulness

is obvious

to any thinking soul

but the dairy is about profit

about unfairness and control

there is no compensation

only milk sales at a high

the animals don’t deserve a thing

for both of them will die

they of course beholden

to the life that has been shared

the irreverence of being

undervalued and so scared

and that humiliation

will be taken to the grave

scornful and despising

each paltry little knave

enters the great abattoir

and is shocked to hear the cries

rejected by society

another angel dies
