21 days the expectancy
of life within the cell
warm and moist
and dense with air
what else can we tell
29 million eggs per day
are eaten in the UK
so hatching out of one of them
is the one that got away
well up to a point
if it is male
what they going to do
is win a brand new ticket
to a place
where very few
ever come back smiling
for the conveyor belt
to hell
is the conveyor belt of joyous chirps
but its not to dinky dell
instead its to the great toothed one
the big steel grinder, who
we are pushed head first
along
and we all fall into
a yellow mash of bodies
thats when the chirpings cease
those already on the conveyor
they will soon find peace
some may get another form of death
its suffocation
tossed into great plastic bags
an end to all salvation
a great bundle of feathery souls
chirping for all their worth
sitting in the sunshine
considered of no worth
as for me a chick I’d hoped
to see the world again
this is my 15th incarnation
but, what I now deign
to realize is the majority of
chicks
will die this way
unless you are female
then its curtains too
okay
you become a pullet then a hen
and maybe you
will end up in some farm yard cat
or some gamey stew
