Gram Vicas for the Dalits or untouchables

To be born is a marvellous expression of life
but to find that your passage is dark
part of a caste system lost in the past
that clearly still makes a great mark
even today on those souls with dismay
who find themselves locked in this hold
in the clutches where fear and resentment appear
and people are apparently cold
you find yourself deep in the doldrums
some look upon you as dirt
but you were created from the same mould
you both could wear the same shirt
but you are Dalit a low caste
the lowest of low and therefore
you are not welcome to use the same toilet
to drink the same water their door
will always be closed to you sadly
this is an evil and we
must help India rise from its ashes
like the pheonix and fly earnestly
Gram Vikas is one such creation
born out of what is concern
practical respectful living
hopeful that all castes can learn
to share to be part of a village
and to carry their love across castes
for all men are equal under the sun
and all women too haul their masts
up in the breeze and go sailing
for women too contribute so
equality really creates so much more
and everyone then just can grow
water of course and sanitation
are the key to good life as we know
health is a quality all can attain
and with it the village can grow
I looked and I saw all those women
who suffered such strife brought upon
themselves by the caste of their being
and the freedom that comes when its gone
how they smile more their wrinkles
apparently are
attractive too no one’s forlorn
Dalits are dalits Brahmins are brahmins
but all of them when they were born
cried at their mothers side
given the life the creation the magic
they shared
whoever wherever whatever the honesty
everyone bared
and so we have happiness growing
a forest of equality
sparkling flowers tended for hours
Gram Vikas and humility
