A peaceful scene
and understanding of the gifts
we all can share
a hill
a field
places to build
our friendship
and be more aware
different species
perceived needs
sitting quietly
breathing quietly
and where all this leads
to a better understanding
of reality
and appreciation of the gifts
of life
as David Hartley told us
centuries ago
Man creates his own hell
with his knife
slashed across the throats
of cows
once peaceful
bled out so that we
now might consume
their peace and quiet
and wondrous caring qualities
sacrificed for pleasure
in the gloom
that we provide
their tears we fail to notice
nothing that we do can now reveal
a compromise for all that we are after
is a slice of flesh
to make into a meal
