Lovers

In the dark of the forest
the birch stand forlorn
skin of pure silver
since they were born
baked by the sun
soaked by the rain
thrown by the wind
in the vilest refrain

solitary sentinels
worthy of much
witnessing everything
clearly they touch
the hearts and the minds
of those wanderers, who
kiss in the moonlight
and know what they do

holding hands
feeling love
finding breath hard to take
soaked in masses of moonbeams
can they stay awake
the forests alive
with the nocturnal souls
who see everything
on their myriad strolls

but the lovers intent on
their sweet serenade
are blind to the darkness
in their hearts are laid
tumultuous blessings
and the tenderest thoughts
of country locations
and far away ports
places they’ve stayed
and embraced all they’ve seen
in the darkest of forest
that soon will be green
