The toddler and the tortoise

When an old man meets a toddler
It can be quite an affair
And Michael and me I think
hit it off real well
Inquisitive and boisterous
inventive and creative
a bundle of pure energy
I fell
hopelessly in love with him
and really
we had our ups and downs
But what I found
was Michael has humility
beyond his tiny years
and I think he’s the nicest boy
around
Sure he gave me stick
He kicked and punched me
But in his heart
He’s working out his way
He’s all wound up
and really going places
And he fills his waking hours
with lots of play
He’s just so fast
and me a poor old tortoise
But then the tortoise
has a good tough shell
And though he tries
to get his where for all with me
on balance we seem equal
and that’s swell.

(He is my best friend’s first child
and I spent many hours playing with him
over the last 2 months which on reflection
taught me a great deal)
