“Jyoti”. On the streets of Patiala in the Punjab, INDIA

We speak of the voiceless
Those of us who can see and hear
We know
The voiceless have a way
With them
Of communication so
And there she was
Beside the bikes
Beside the busy street
Crying sighing dying
Wondering hopeful feet
Many feet walked by her
The car hit her and she
Dragged herself to where she lay
In the deepest agony

It was hot and it was noisy
And she was on the street
Feeling her own heart beating
Beating in the heat
And a lady Mrs Seema
Rang the guardians who came
The angel in blue who do what they do
You could feel that
You knew that was true

No wings just love a sereneness
Quietly and gently he sat
Tending to her listening to her
And she realised yes that
He was one of those angels
Gently he tended to her
Lifting her sharing with her her pain
As her life’s blood had begun to drain

He took her at once to a private vet
An amputation yes she did get
And when he took her to the place
Where the other canine friends did grace
The scene felt the love it was there
In the cage on the blanket where
Others all came to offer their care
Concerned were they all and they all did share

JYOTi lays there but no more is she
Alone she’s with friends infinity
Opened its doors to the pampering and she
Will recover and want to truthfully

These guardians of the unfortunate
Are the saviours of tomorrow
They break our hearts
With continued sorrow
