Spirit

New York can get real cold
And this old kennel
Draped in frost
Was home of one dog
Who it seemed paid
A real high cost

For owned by humans
And being left to be
Frozen to the marrow
Which he was actually

His bowl of water solid ice
No food around no more
Wired alas with no place to go
Desolate for sure

A god forsaken existence
From arrant fools who kept
Guard dogs outside in their yard
Seeing him I wept

Not even dried food or anything
Just a frozen block
The wind blew like crazy
It was quite a shock

Seemingly a dog neglected
With no where to go
It seems he never went for walks
Which few around did know

Now and then they chucked him something
But never stopped to see
Whether he ate it or wasted it
Or was there effectively

Worthless people malefic
With a tendency to be
Completely psychopathic
So terrible to see

Spirit felt an outcast
So forlorn and blue
On ones own forever
With nothing he could do

But roll into a ball and hope
Jack Frost would take him fast
If only he could keep out of the wretched
Winters blast

Not even an old blanket
And the kennel roof was holed
When we found him we called him
He wasn’t all that old

But clearly felt uncared for
A hapless little soul
Doom and gloom and misery
He didn’t see a role

Left for him in his sad life
Inglorious and unblessed
With circumstances deteriorating
It had begun to test

His spirit and his determination
To try and see it through
The ignorance of guardians
Who don’t know what to do

Their numb between their ears
And heartless too for they
Only look at the dog as their employee
So to say

Slackness and a laxity
Are compounding Spirits pain
The harshness of his environment
The pitiless refrain

Humanity is descending fast
Into the pits of grime
Thank goodness we have rescued him
And not before due time
