Circus

The very thought of circus
conjures up a space
a ring of sand
a ringmaster
the trapeze
lets understand
the thought of several elephants
crammed into a yard
and left all day to ponder
for them life is so hard

this is a wild creature
whose memory is long
who recalls the march
for water
who knows now just how wrong
it is locked up in circus
remembering those days
when training with the bullhooks
created this malaise

Circus clearly countermands
the order of the day
life exists in limbo
and the elephants just pay
their innocence is compromised
their soul urge shot away
prisoners of the ignorant
who expect them to play

at tricks and futile dancing steps
it draws down such distress
its complete dereliction
that the circus won’t confess
and for that there must be protest
we must fight to change the law
wild animals must never be included
thats for sure
in any entertainment programme
bloody anywhere
whether Sea world, Coles or Ringling
or anywhere else so there
