Ivory and Hong Kong

Every child on earth knows
what an elephant is
a unique being with a lifespan
close to us
some 70 years they walk
the soils of Africa and India
and I have one main question
to discuss
its infamy and selfishness
and wickedness
of markets in Hong Kong and
China where
much of the ivory finds its way
the torment and agony on display
and what amounts to really
dire despair

The Elephants need their tusks
as tools an integral part and they
when cornered by the bandits
the lowest forms of life
have to watch as they cut their tusks
away
its evil and its leading to extinction
these sweet iconic animals need space
China throws its spanners in the market
and offers real good prices just to place
forward orders that attract the criminals
and this is why so many elephants die
to sacrifice them for a bunch of trinkets
is a price creation feels now is too high

amongst the profit seekers
few are prophets
mostly they are hoodlums
on the look
out for a fast buck
this market it does suck
its frighteningly obvious
the book
is thrown at every soul
who thinks to conquer
to breach the true security
we know
and murder in cold blood
or poison them the thud
of bodies crashing down
with such a blow

the world now feels the need
to intercede here
consternation has to be
in vogue
it is with trepidation
that we bring the locals in
and hope to god
we can deter the rogue
the craven hearted spiritless
disfigure
they care nothing for the animals
who do
wander in their herds to far off
waterholes
and trumpet loud and clear
when they are in view

they really have no enemies
apart from man
and the tables are being turned
it must be said
there is still trophy hunting
and some hunting
but most of what we see
is really led
by China and its messages
from Hong Kong
a trading port with history
and we
must try to stop this trade
and, try to put paid
to these particlarly awful consignments
now that be
