Burma ( Looking for signs of elephant life)

Burma a natural lost kingdom
forests as far as the eye
can see and beyond dense
and so green
reach right up to the sky
bamboo dense patches and creepers
all sorts of trees rich and tall
there’s wild banana and such vegetation
beautiful untouched its all
amazing a team of good people
are out there assessing it all
and will be reporting to the Burmese government
answering really a call

other great forests in Asia
most of its cut down and gone
all of that natural magic
that once really was out upon
the environment bursting with life forms
now most of that is blown away
and all of the animals that once were there
have disappeared now well today
there may be a few in the desolate parts
but the bulk have been lost probably
for all time that’s the ignorance
they have displayed
paper and palm oil now be

the team have a short time to find out
if there are elephants here
hopeful a breeding herd might be around
to find them would help them to clear
up any queries and help them
to safeguard the forests for they
are creating a place where the elephants breed
Asian Elephants well that would say

the forests need special attention
50 years they have stood calm
whilst Asia denuded its forests
Burma kept all of that charm
and peering into its dense apron
and feeling and hearing those sounds
this is virgin jungle this is pure excitement
everywhere seemed out of bounds

but there was a growing frustration
they were looking for breeding herds, and
in this dense forest, it is hard to spot them
and it isn’t hard, to understand
these elephants keep very private
they move very fast and can be
under the thickest of cover
so they really are quite hard to see

but evidence was mounting clearly
fresh dung and plants all knocked flat
and then in that moment they seemed so unsure of
there they were, they were just at
the ridge ovre 10 of them females and calves
evidence they wanted so
a Matriach and her 2 daughters
and grand daughters too so they know

the forest is really sustainable
and more than one herd are around
that being the case
through the entire forest
many more likely are found
this was the evidence they needed
to take back to the government who
promised to study their findings
and hopefully they will be too

for the forests will need some protection
from the corporate world who would come
and tear down the forest and re plant palm oil
or log out the trees which is dumb
in Malaysia and Indonesia, we know
much of the forest is lost
logged out dramatically with not much to show
such magic has probably cost
the synergy clearly what’s left is a lifeless
imbalanced polluted mess
the whole of the ambience totally wasted
and left really with no redress

the elephants create the environment
and other sweet earthlings abound
one hopes that the regime in Burma will think
and not go back over old ground
not follow the Asian experience
bar corporates from the place
for they just destroy they never employ
and what’s left is just a disgrace

one hopes that this natural lost kingdom
will be that lost kingdom for years
and Burma will cherish what is its great forests
and preserve them for hundreds of years
if she does then this haven will prosper
and the elephants clearly will be
given the chance to rebuild their numbers
for our children and their children to see
