Going home

Avebury

the neolithis henge in Wiltshire wild

we had spent a day there

despite it being mild

on and off it had  rained hard

and with Puddles everwhere

we both felt tired and miserable

and very aware

of the journey home

we would get Sat Nav on the case

use the heater to dry our hair

and get us back to base.

a mile or so along the road

sat nav suggested we

turn off to the left

and down a lane  it seemed to me

It might be a short cut

at least i hoped it was

the lane got narrower

and more boggy

and that was  just because

sat navs really can be a pain

and clearly  this one  erred

after a mile we were in a field

and, what had occurred

no space to  turn around

so cagily i drove backwards

rather slowly and the ground

was sloshing  and with all the luck

i got  back to the lane

and  then reversed  back all the way

and it was  such a pain

had to stop and get out a number of times

and found

a little owl not once but twice

“i wanted  to throw in the towel”

either side of thev winding lane was water and a deep bog

driving carefully no mistakes

it really was a  slog

pitch black dark no one about

nobody would know

reversing into a quagmire

the fear in me did grow

but at last we reached the  main road

as for sat nav a machine

if anybody mentions Avebury to me

i say i have been!!

the darkness the bog thelittle owls

all come back to me

remembering  the perilous drive

Yes deep in my psyche.
