Chocolate

From Pacari to Cadbury
The best to the worst
Upright and honour
To just feeling cursed
Children and chocolate
What do we see
Big names with secrets
That should never be

In the Ivory Coast
And Ghana we know
Children are working
Where cacao beans grow
Its dangerous work
And they do not get paid
Its out and out slavery
A disgraceful parade

Of suspicion and artfulness
Ignoble shame
Children its damn hot
And never a game
These big corporations
Opportunists they be
Unethical trading
Goes on constantly

Where are their morals
They so lack honesty
Its really a racket
And they fail miserably
They swindle and cheat
Making profits galore
Blood sweat and tears
Do you want to hear more

Every excuse in the book
When we ask
Their unfallen state
In the sunshine they bask
Hands torn to shreds
Mosquitos and more
Exhaustion its heavy work
For chocolate thats raw

And so many super stores
Don’t even check
They sell all the big brands
Its all hands on deck
Scratching each others backs
Thats what they do
Pollution and toxics
And habitats too

Suffering badly
Refined Palm oil
Slavery sugar
It makes my blood boil
Animal testing
And human rights
Workers they suffer
Tax conduct, to heights

Getting away with stuff
Thats what they do
But its children at work
In great danger its true
Taking advantage
Of innocence we
Keep their coffers expanding
The ones we cant see

Supply chains are rotten
Their politics stink
Environmental reporting
Oh yes theres a link
Arms and technology
Factory farming
The chocolate you are eating
It is self harming

The Ethical Consumer
Rate cadbury
With a naught out of 18.5
We can see
Pacari is tops
Plamil 17
Divine 12.5
And far from Green
Green and Blacks
Rates a 2
Mars gets a 1
Kit Kat a half
All this under the sun

Each time you buy
Chocolate what you must do
Is think of child slavery
And it is true
All those loose morals
That slippery slope
What is unvirtuous
Just how they cope

Those poor little kids
Sweating in the sun
Many in danger
They have no fun
No gadgets to work with
Just slaving away
With cacao and mosquito’s
And sadness at play

A lack of integrity
No justice there
Outrage and resentment
And heaps of despair
We should boycott
The chocolate
Growing under the sun
With so much impropriety
When alls said and done

They are wrongdoing sinners
Their heartlessness shows
They don’t give a damn
About all of my prose
All of the children
They fail to pay
Or look after or feed
At the end of the day
They are making big salaries
Driving big cars
In their own right
They believe they are stars

But reality shows me
Their hostility
They don’t care tuppence
Just no charity
They are haughty and lofty
Toffee nosed snobs
Puffed up and inflated
No better than yobs

As for the children
They suffer each day
They are losing their childhood
For them theres no way
Forward just fear
Just terror and dread
Hatred and prejudice
Inside their head.
