Wayland Smithy

Near the Uffington white horse
And castle
Close to the Ridgeway
We see
A neolithic long barrow
And Chamber tomb
Wayland Smithy

It is a place that’s so
special
With timber and stone chambered
Walls
Dating from 3590 BC
And its age and its state
Just enthrals

KIng Eadred probably
Gave it its name
And a story explaining
And so
An invisible smith
Lived thereabouts
If your horse required shooing
You’d go
Leave your horse
And an amount of money
And it would quietly be shod
That is the story
Of one Wayland Smithy
Though some think
Its all a bit odd.

At Ashbury in Oxfordshire
In a small wood
Excavated by Stuart PIggott
And Richard Atkinson 1962/3
